In the beginning there were words, and the words, and the words created history and the power to challenge the imagination. From the beginning of this country black writers have created a rich literacy legacy which has yet to be fully appreciated by the world. The failure to own printing presses and channels of distributation , which would allow the diverse voices of the black experiences to be heard, has muffled the voices of the past and threatened to silence the voices of the present and future. But despite these set backs, black writers have provided great insight into their experience. They have shown us America through the eyes of its most oppressed people, and have offered us solutions
